Career Readiness: Career Clusters

A full 5-day unit built on the current 14-cluster framework

The national model was modernized to 14 Career Clusters and 72 sub-clusters, and states began aligning to it in 2025-26, while almost everything else on the market still teaches the retired 16. This five-day unit teaches the current 14, names all 72 sub-clusters, and ships a 16-to-14 crosswalk so you can work from either list. With 14 printable posters, a 56-card sort, a gallery walk and a pathway planner.

Cluster cards

A profile card for all 14

What each cluster is, its sub-clusters, sample jobs with the education actually required, and the high school courses that start it. Behind them sits the full 72 sub-cluster index, which is the layer where findable jobs live.

  • ✓ All 14 clusters profiled
  • ✓ The full 72 sub-cluster index
  • ✓ A student-facing “Why 14 and Not 16?” explainer

The sort

Fifty-six cards and one good argument

Groups get the 14 cluster headers and sort 56 job cards before they read anything. Getting it wrong first is what makes the reference cards land afterward. The key names the five cards that always cause arguments and why both readings are defensible.

  • ✓ 56 job cards plus 14 headers, ready to cut
  • ✓ Recording sheet with the debrief built in
  • ✓ Full sort key, every card by cluster

The posters

Your walls, done in one print run

14 printable cluster posters go up around the room, and students visit eight or more on the gallery walk with a recording sheet. They stay up afterward and get pointed at during course selection.

  • ✓ 14 posters, print and tape up
  • ✓ Gallery walk recording sheet
  • ✓ Works as a CCR bulletin board all year

Why Teachers Choose It

Current, not retired

14 clusters and 72 sub-clusters, plus a crosswalk for the old 16, because both lists will be in circulation for years.

All 72 sub-clusters named

The layer where findable jobs live. “Healthcare” is too broad for a student to act on; “Health Data & Administration” is something they can go look up.

A sort you reuse for years

Print the 56 cards on cardstock once and the deck works as a bell ringer, a sub plan and a review game.

14 posters included

Print once and your walls are done. The gallery walk is built around them and they stay up for course selection.

Open and teach

A Read-First guide and a five-day plan with a three-day short version mean about ten minutes of prep.

Print and digital

Print-ready PDFs plus three self-grading Google Forms™, including the one that ranks your class's interest.

FAQ

What exactly is in the Career Clusters unit?
24 deliverables across five days: a Read-First teacher guide, a five-day plan with a three-day short version, a Standards & Skills Map, a 16-to-14 crosswalk, a 12-slide editable deck, profile cards for all 14 clusters, the full 72 sub-cluster index, a note catcher, 14 printable posters with a gallery walk sheet, the 56-card Cluster Sort with its recording sheet and key, a two-cluster comparison, a pathway planner, an 8-question quiz, the Cluster Pitch task, and every key and rubric.
Does it teach 14 clusters or 16?
The current 14, with all 72 sub-clusters named. A 16-to-14 crosswalk is included so you can translate your state site, your course catalog or an older poster on the fly, and a student-facing explainer covers what changed and why.
Are there salary figures in it?
No, on purpose. Pay data goes stale and a student copying a number out of a packet has learned the opposite of the lesson. Students are pointed at the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook for current numbers instead.
What formats are included?
Editable .docx and .pptx plus print-ready .pdf, so you can teach it on paper, on a screen, or through Google Classroom.
What grades is it for?
Grades 8 to 12, and it works well in middle school career exploration. It fits CTE, career readiness, advisory and college and career readiness programs.
